Police in Mozambique say Islamist militants massacred dozens of people in the northern province of Cabo Delgado two weeks ago, although the details are just being released.
The victims of the April 7 attack in the village of Xitaxi were young people who resisted pressure to join the resistance group. Although there have been conflicting reports about the death toll from the incident, police spokesman Orlando Mudumane put the official count at 52.
No organization has claimed responsibility for the attack; but there is no shortage of candidates, including al-Shabab and the ISIS-affiliated Islamic State Central Africa Province (Iscap). Meanwhile, national police commander Bernardino Rafael denied last week that any part of Cabo Delgado was controlled by insurgents.
