GOP Lawmaker Introduces Bill to Put National Security Warnings on TikTok, FaceApp

GOP lawmaker introduces bill to put national security warnings on ...

Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) on Tuesday introduced legislation that would attach national security warnings to popular apps like TikTok and FaceApp. If the bill passes, the warnings would be shown to consumers trying to download TikTok, FaceApp, and other applications developed in countries considered national security risks.

TikTok is linked to the Chinese company ByteDance, while FaceApp has ties to Russia. Other apps that would have the national security warning are linked to Venezuela, North Korea, Syria, Sudan, and Iran. “Some phone apps are fun and useful, others are counterintelligence threats.

Americans should know which is which before they hit the download button,” Banks said in a statement. This is not the first time proposed legislation has sought to put curbs on TikTok. The app, which has been downloaded more than 100 million times in the United States, came under fire last month when Reps. Josh Hawley (R-Miss.) and Rick Scott (R-Fla.) proposed an outright TikTok ban for federal employees. Concerns over TikTok grew when China hawks pointed out that under the terms of a 2017 Chinese law, Chinese companies are required to comply with data requests for state intelligence work.
