The National Basketball Association (NBA) said late Wednesday it was suspending the season after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert reportedly contracted the Covid-19 coronavirus.

Earlier Wednesday, the league reportedly agreed to play the remainder of the season in empty stadiums, but the news of Gobert’s illness forced the NBA’s hand. Given the physical nature of basketball and the near-daily schedule of games and practices, league officials determined there was no realistic way to continue with the season if one player had the coronavirus.

Teams that recently played the Jazz had been advised to go into self-quarantine. It was not immediately clear whether the NBA was suspending the rest of the season, or whether the season could be restarted at some point in the future.

Meanwhile, the National Collegiate Athletic Association made the decision Wednesday to hold its men’s and women’s basketball tournaments without fans because of the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

NCAA president Mark Emmert said a protocol for the medical screening of people entering the arenas is still being worked out, along with what constitutes essential staff and how to define family members. CBS and Turner plan to broadcast the games as usual. Other media members will be allowed into the arenas to cover the games, but how many is still being determined.
